Createspace
ISBN: 978-1478151708
Published July 3, 2012
Softcover, 40 pages

Synopsis:

Captain No Beard and his pirate ship The Flying Dragon set sail for a voyage of the imagination with his fearless crew of four: First Mate Hallie, Mongo the Monkey, Linus the loudmouthed lion, and Fribbit the floppy frog. Normally a young boy named Alexander, his cousin Hallie, and three stuffed animals, once they board his bed their world is transformed into a magical vessel, sailing the seven seas on dangerous and exciting adventures!

Our thoughts:

My son and I thought this book was cute, funny, adorable and well-written. The illustrations are colorful, fun and capture the spirit of this tale. There is no indication who made them so I will assume they are from the author.

Captain No Beard has a crew of four, his cousin Hallie plus a lion, monkey and frog, all with imaginative names. I thought the captain's name was clever too! The crew are aboard their ship ready for adventure and they learned the dangers of the high seas and the hard work of being a pirate.

My son thought the ending was perfect and wished the book description on the back cover did not give it away because the ending is what makes the story clever and fun, adding an element of surprise for younger readers. This is the first of a series and we will feature the other four books also. Take a look at the book trailer. It's well done too.

Note: This book is rated C = clean read.

About the author:

Named to Kirkus Reviews' Best of 2012 for her first book, award winning author Carole P. Roman started writing as a dare from one of her sons. Using an imaginary game she played with her grandson as a base, Captain No Beard was born. It has followed with four more books to the series.

She is also the author of a groundbreaking new nonfiction series about culture around the world. "If You Were Me and Lived in..." combines her teaching past with her love of exploration and interest in the world around us.

Writing for children has opened up a whole second act for her. While she is still working in her family business, this has enabled her to share her sense of humor as well as love for history and culture with the audience she adores. Roman lives on Long Island with her husband and near her children.
