As she closes in on the killer who has taken Olivia, Rachel becomes his next target.

Kirkus Reviews states, "Florentin’s passionate novel overflows with tension... A fierce thriller that doesn’t offer many chances to catch a breath."

Author Interview with Gustavo Florentin

Please help me welcome Gustavo on Library of Clean Reads!

LCR: If I were to ask you to describe what your novel is about in one sentence what would it be?

GF: A Columbia student descends into the netherworld of runaways and predators to find her sister who has been abducted by a killer who auctions the deaths of young girls in an eBay of agony.

LCR: The Schwarzschild Radius deals with some serious issues such as child prostitution and pedophilia. Did you find it hard to write scenes that portrayed the evilness of these acts?

GF: I used the technique of "less is more" and implied a lot of the heinous acts. Much of it happens offstage, so I didn't really dramatize much of the violence committed against children. Making those scenes explicit would have been difficult and would have detracted from the writing.

LCR: How much of your current career as a network engineer influences what you write about?

GF: It keeps me current with technology, which is an inescapable element in most thriller writing these days. A lot of the twists in The Schwarzschild Radius wouldn't have been possible twenty years ago because there was no social media.

LCR: If you could be a character in one of your novels, who would you be and why?

GF: I like Detective McKenna. He's flawed but relentless. You don't want him on your tail.

LCR: What is the best part about being an author? And the hardest?

GF: The best part is writing a sentence or a plot twist that really resonates. That gives me a sense of satisfaction that nothing else does. The hardest is finding the time to write. I have a full-time job, a small business and I love to read.

LCR: What is the most daring thing you've ever done? The funniest?

GF: The most daring thing was skydiving. Once is enough. Adrenaline? There is nothing like it when you let go of that wing. The funniest? I was riding my bike one time in a park and rode it right off a bunch of stairs then did a summersault at the end.

LCR: What is the next project you are working on?

GF: I’m writing a conspiracy political thriller. It’s a far cry from The Schwarzschild Radius, and the good news is that my protagonist is ex-Special Forces which makes a lot of things easier, like prevailing over the bad guys. I needed a main character with special forces experience and lo and behold, Detective McKenna of the Schwarzschild Radius fit the bill to a T. It saved me the trouble of creating a new protagonist.

LCR: Thank you, Gustavo, for taking the time to answer my questions.
